EVERYTHING YOU NEED TO KNOW BEFORE YOU GO
First Time in Athens

Planning your first trip to Athens? You’re probably asking yourself the same questions that almost every visitor asks before arriving.

Is Athens walkable? Is it safe? Where should I stay? Do I need a car? How many days are enough?

The good news is that Athens is one of Europe’s easiest capitals to explore. With the right location, comfortable walking shoes, and a little local knowledge, you can experience the city’s most famous landmarks and authentic neighborhoods without stress.

At Acropolis Grid Athens, many of our guests are visiting Greece for the first time. Here are the questions we answer most often.

Is Athens Walkable?

Absolutely.

One of Athens’ greatest advantages is that its historic center is compact. Most of the city’s major attractions are connected by pedestrian streets, allowing visitors to explore comfortably on foot.

From Acropolis Grid Athens you can easily walk to:

  • Monastiraki
  • Plaka
  • The Acropolis
  • Ancient Agora
  • Roman Agora
  • Psyrri
  • Syntagma Square
  • Ermou Shopping Street
  • National Garden

Walking is, by far, the best way to discover Athens. Along the way you’ll find hidden cafés, local bakeries, historic churches, street art, rooftop bars, and quiet squares that many visitors would otherwise miss.

How Many Days Do You Need in Athens?

It depends on how you like to travel.

2 Days

Perfect for seeing the highlights:

  • Acropolis
  • Acropolis Museum
  • Plaka
  • Monastiraki
  • Psyrri

3 Days

Our recommended stay.

You’ll have time to explore the major attractions while also discovering local neighborhoods, enjoying longer meals, shopping, and experiencing Athens at a slower pace.

4–5 Days

Ideal if you enjoy museums, food experiences, rooftop bars, or plan a day trip to Cape Sounion or the nearby islands.

Is Athens Safe?

Overall, yes.

Athens is considered a safe destination for tourists, especially in the historic center where most visitors spend their time.

As with any major European city, it’s wise to take normal precautions:

  • Keep an eye on your belongings in crowded places.
  • Avoid displaying expensive valuables unnecessarily.
  • Stay aware of your surroundings when using public transport.
  • Use licensed taxis or trusted ride-hailing services if travelling late at night.

The areas around the Acropolis, Plaka, Monastiraki, Syntagma, and Psyrri are busy throughout the day and evening, making them comfortable for most visitors.

What Should You Wear in Athens?

Comfort is essential.

You’ll spend much more time walking than you probably expect.

We recommend:

  • Comfortable walking shoes
  • Light clothing during spring and summer
  • A hat and sunglasses
  • Sunscreen
  • A reusable water bottle

If you’re visiting churches or monasteries, modest clothing is appreciated.

Spring and autumn are especially pleasant for walking, while summer afternoons can become very hot.

Can You Visit Athens Without a Car?

Yes—and we actually recommend it.

If you’re staying in the city center, a car is unnecessary.

Most attractions are within walking distance, while the Metro connects the airport, Piraeus Port, and several neighborhoods quickly and efficiently.

Having a hotel in the heart of Athens means you’ll spend more time enjoying the city and less time worrying about traffic or parking.

What Is the Best Area to Stay?

For first-time visitors, location makes all the difference.

The most popular neighborhoods include:

Plaka

Perfect for history, charming streets, traditional tavernas, and romantic evenings.

Monastiraki

Ideal for shopping, local markets, nightlife, and excellent transport connections.

Psyrri

Known for creative restaurants, wine bars, live music, and a vibrant atmosphere.

Syntagma

Excellent for luxury shopping, business travel, and easy access to public transport.

Acropolis Grid Athens offers an ideal balance, placing guests within walking distance of all these neighborhoods while providing a modern boutique experience in the heart of the city.

Is Monastiraki Noisy?

It depends on where you stay.

Monastiraki Square itself is lively from morning until late evening, particularly during the summer months.

However, many nearby streets remain surprisingly peaceful.

One advantage of staying slightly away from the busiest squares is enjoying easy access to the neighborhood while still having a comfortable place to relax after a day of sightseeing.

Plaka or Monastiraki?

Many travelers ask which neighborhood they should choose.

The truth is—you don’t have to choose.

They’re only a short walk apart.

Choose Plaka if you prefer:

  • Quiet streets
  • Traditional architecture
  • Romantic atmosphere
  • Local boutiques

Choose Monastiraki if you enjoy:

  • Markets
  • Street performers
  • Shopping
  • Lively cafés
  • Nightlife

During your stay, you’ll almost certainly visit both several times.

Is Omonia Safe?

Omonia has changed significantly over recent years, with ongoing redevelopment, new hotels, restaurants, and public spaces.

During the day, many visitors pass through the area without any issues.

Like in many large cities, the atmosphere changes at night, particularly on quieter side streets.

If you’re unfamiliar with Athens, it’s generally more comfortable to stay in neighborhoods such as Monastiraki, Plaka, Psyrri, or Syntagma, where most visitors spend their time.

How Much Money Do You Need Per Day?

Athens offers excellent value compared to many other European capitals.

A comfortable daily budget might look like this:

Budget Traveller
€60–90 per day

  • Public transport
  • Casual dining
  • Museums
  • Coffee

Mid-Range Traveller
€120–200 per day

  • Boutique hotel
  • Traditional restaurants
  • Cocktails
  • Shopping
  • Museum tickets

Luxury Traveller
€250+ per day

  • Premium dining
  • Rooftop bars
  • Private tours
  • Luxury shopping

Many attractions are within walking distance, helping visitors save money on transportation.

✔️ Wear comfortable shoes—you’ll walk more than you expect.

✔️ Leave time for spontaneous discoveries rather than planning every minute.

✔️ Enjoy breakfast before heading to the Acropolis.

✔️ Don’t try to see everything in one day. Athens rewards slow travel.
